WASHING:
Wash as little as possible. If you can, spot clean with a mild detergent such as Woolite. It is important to rinse that area well.
You may wash your item in the washing machine. Use cold water in a gentle cycle, and add only a tablespoon of mild liquid detergent. If you use too much soap, it might be necessary to re-rinse.
DRYING:
Hang dry if possible. When item is almost dry, I like to put it in the dryer on a low or no temperature so that the fabric softens for wear.
After-market Water-Repellant sprays:
This should be used after many, many wears and/or washes. If your product is not as waterproof as it used to be, then try double-rinsing first. Soap breaks down water and dirt, and if it is left in the pores of the fabric, it can soak through the fabric instead of rolling off. If you decide to use a spray, remember that you will probably sacrifice breathability after use.
